WHAT IS CORPORATE EDUCATION?This report discusses the extensive education and training programs established and run by corporations and other organizations, largely profitmaking enterprises whose primary purpose is something other than education, in the context of traditional higher education. As used in this report, “corporate education” is education offered by a business or industry for its own employees.HOW EXTENSIVE IS CORPORATE EDUCATION?Corporate education is an extensive, multifaceted endeavor, costing billions of dollars, educating millions of people, and absorbing many working hours annually. It is estimated, for example, that approximately $30 billion to $50 billion is spent on formal employee education and $180 billion on informal, on-the-job, education. Employees in companies with 500 or more employees–4.4 million people–can expect to receive frequent instruction paid for and provided by their employers.IS CORPORATE EDUCATION A THREAT TO HIGHER EDUCATION?As colleges and universities strive to respond to the needs of nontraditional students, they often find that corporate educators have preceded them. Corporations, with the assistance of the American Council on Education and the New York Board of Regents, have had their courses evaluated, frequently leading to the granting of credit for corporate coursework by colleges and universities.Courses offered by corporations range from remedial to postgraduate level management and technical courses. Corporations have even founded their own colleges, known as “corporate colleges.” These educational efforts potentially could threaten the health, and devalue the worth of, higher education, but in fact, corporate education is compatible with–indeed complements–traditional higher education. Higher education in the United States has been responsive to the needs of the workplace since the beginning of the federal period. The prevailing dialogue in higher education has long been the weighing of tradeoffs–practically and philosophically–between general education and what now is called “career education.” The formal recognition of instruction independent of the providers is a multifaceted and complex enterprise on the postsecondary education scene in and of itself. These efforts have accomplished two things. First, the structural conformity of noncollegiate instruction with collegiate instruction (for example, associating credit hours with contact hours) facilitates transfers and students mobility and opens up an array of potential cooperative efforts between businesses and colleges. Second, they have served as a major channel of communication between school and corporation about educational content and methods. This report presents the interaction between corporate education and these recognition processes, a path by which noncollegiate education can wend its way into the most traditional patterns of higher education. Innovations find their way into higher education in five ways, one of which is when external institutions appear on the scene to challenge, titillate, and/or draw attention to significant issues. The emergence of corporate education with its interest in formal recognition offers opportunities and challenges to higher education in the way it teaches, the students it seeks, and the perception of the purposes of education. The growth of corporate education is a stimulus to both internal collegiate debates and public policy decision making.WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM THE PROLIFERATION OF CORPORATE EDUCATION?Many profitable educational ventures have been initiated that were provoked by employers recognition of their responsibility for developing their employees. The American University, for example, using its own faculty, offers an MS in toxicology at Litton Industries, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology cooperates in an education program with IBM and Digital Equipment. An indirect benefit to colleges resulting from an increased awareness of conditions in higher education on the part of business and industry has been the use of modern technology by colleges and universities to educates future employees. And a national discussion on the role of colleges and universities in American society has been stimulated by heightened awareness of shared national needs.

ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO, NOBODY HAD EVER heard of six-pack abs, but plenty of guys had them–even though they didnt have access to 24-hour health clubs or “scientifically” designed exercise machines. Instead they built their abs in the gym of everyday life, usually doing outdoor work such as chopping wood, tilling fields, and stacking hay–movements that built stronger, more powerful, and better-looking midsection muscles than those of some of the most fit men today, Were not suggesting you give up your cubicle, your office, or your indoor job, but we do say forget nearly everything youve been told about how to build your abs: Most of it was a lie. Lie 1 Targeting your six-pack is the best way to work your abs The truth: Your abs are designed to work with other muscles as much as theyre designed to work with each other. For instance, the rectus abdominis–the official name for the six-pack muscle–shares connective tissue with the lower chest. In other words, your lower pecs are honorary abdominal muscles. So by exclusively doing exercises such as crunches that target only your rectus abdominis–a trend that started in the 1980s–youre actually underworking your abs. And that means you wont achieve optimal development. Keep in mind that most “ab” exercises dont truly isolate your rectus abdominis anyway. In fact, the six-pack provides just 20% of the pulling power in a situp, says Stuart McGill, Ph.D., author of Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance. Do it instead of: Situps; dumbbell or barbell pullovers (it works the same muscles, but adds work for your abs)
Q Is it easier for a man to get six-pack abs than for a woman to? A Yes, says Glenn Gaesser, Ph.D., an exercise physiology professor at the University of Virginia. The appearance of defined, rock-hard ab muscles is possible only if the abs are highly trained and there is very little fat on top of them. “On average, women have more total body fat than men, and proportionally tney nave more subcutaneous fat in their bellies, Gaesser says. Whats more, its easier for men to lose body fat than it is for women, partly due to hormonal differences. “If you put men and women on the same exercise and diet program, men will lose more weight on average,” Gaesser says. Of course, not every man will lose more fat than every woman will. There are exceptions: Some women can achieve a six-pack without tremendous work, and some men have no chance of ever having sleek abs. The bottom line, Gaesser says: Dont get frustrated if you cant achieve that six-pack. It may not be a matter of lacking willpower. It could be just a matter of genetic and gender destiny. Q I have very big calves and cant get them any smaller no matter what I do. Im not even sure if theyre mostly fat or muscle. What exercises should I do to make my calves smaller? A There arent any exercises you can do to shrink the size of your calves (or any other specific area of your body). If you are overweight, you can lose overall body fat by combining cardiovascular exercise and strength training with a sensible nutrition plan. Some of the fat should come off your calves. However, if youre already lean, chances are you simply have muscular calves. “Theres just no way around that,” says Los Angeles trainer Ken Alan, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise. You may be able to make your legs appear more proportional by building up your guadriceps, hamstrings and gluteals in the weight room. But rather than dislike your large calves, Alan says, “try to think of them as a positive. You have a great genetic advantage for certain athletic activities. Be a sprinter or a volleyball player.”

GCHS Advisor Barbara Merrick said, “The Finance Banking students have to be very responsible and trustworthy. Operation of the bank includes overseeing large sums of money that places them into real world situations every day. It is a very hands on classroom. Students rotate their banking responsibilities every two weeks by teaching money management skills to local elementary age students throughout the county.” In addition, students manage revenue generated from Graves County High School and Graves County Middle School yearbook sales. Merrick said, “Not only do they work in the day-to-day operation of the bank to process savings deposit/withdrawal transactions, they also receive/process loan requests and conduct weekly board meetings. Our greatest accomplishment this year is the complete automation of all accounting functions within the bank. The task was led by current GC Trust President Chris Sanders.” Sanders, a 2004 graduate, is no ordinary student bank president. At 17, hes a self-taught computer whiz who knows software and hardware alike. Previously, all accounting functions of the hank were done manually. We began the school year with automation as our goal, but with Chris expertise, our results far exceeded my expectations. I had two short meetings in which I asked him if he could devise a way to automate the transactions and create the ability to pull up customer information. About 4-6 months later, Chris brought a formal, very businesslike proposal, complete with logo and Users Guide, outlining his plans to use The GC Trust Account Management Software program. GC Trust Account Manager is a powerful solution to account management needs. It is a Microsoft Windows-based software program that allows data entry of all types and stores it safely in the computer. The final product allows students to do inquiries on customer accounts for balances, transactions, etc., and even print account statements. Sanders summarized his program by stating, “The system will provide for data retrieval and data storage of new and existing data consisting of accounts, transactions, and loans. The software is expandable and customizable to meet future needs as well.” Chris Sanders got his first computer when he was ten years old, and since then has taken basic classes offered at school; however, the majority of his knowledge has been self-taught. The GC Trust Account Management Software is not Sanders first attempt at writing computer programs. He wrote his first computer program in 2002 for a University of Kentucky Challenge contest and placed first in the state. Employees of First Kentucky Bank proudly sponsor GC Trust, and appreciate the opportunity to work with each of the students that make up the 24-member class comprised of 15 seniors, eight juniors and one sophomore. Classes are split between two groups as the schools curriculum operates on a block schedule. Officers from each block are chosen at the beginning of the school year and serve in that capacity for a semester. The class also helps to prepare students for life after high school. Matt Ballard, a 2004 senior class member stated, “Working at GC Trust has taught me many different money management skills such as balancing a checkbook, figuring interest on accounts, and managing the money in the bank itself. I am planning on pursuing a career as a doctor, so probably the most important skills I have gained are dealing with savings accounts, and managing personal finances. I will have many expenses to deal with and learning to manage my personal finances and keeping them organized will be an important factor in every day life. I also plan to set aside part of my salary for savings. Participating in GC Trust has helped me to learn the difference between simple and compound interest, which will prove to be a key ingredient in helping me to maximize my saving efficiency.”

Porsche celebrates 60 years by showing the mid-engine Porsche No. 1 sports car that Dr. Ferry Porsche built when he could not find the car of his dreams ATLANTA — Porsche No. 1, the one-of-a-kind, two-seat sports car Dr. Ferdinand Ferry Porsche developed and built after he searched and was unable to find the car of his dreams, makes its North American Concours dElegance debut when it joins other notable and historic vehicles August 14th at Californias famed Pebble Beach Concours dElegance. This occasion is a happy one as Porsche No. 1s first North American trip, to Porsches 50th Anniversary celebration at the Monterrey Historics in 1998, was thwarted when it was damaged in Chicago on its way to California. This tripalso is special as it helps commemorate Porsches 60th anniversary. Before arriving at the Pebble Beach Golf Links([R]), Porsche No. 1 had a starring role in Porsche Cars North Americas 60th Anniversary celebration at its Atlanta corporate headquarters. Affectionately called Porsche No. 1 by the Porsche family and thousands of the brands loyal followers worldwide, this legendary sports car and the lynchpin of Porsches design philosophy began life in June 1947 as engineering project Type 356 in the Porsche design office in Gmund, Austria. Officially known as Type 356-001, Ferry Porsches design concept took shape through the leadership of Karl Rabe, Porsches talented chief designer who worked alongside Ferrys father to develop the original Volkswagen (VW). In post-war Germany and Europe where resources were few yet the desire to rebuild was strong, the Porsche team diligently started building the innovative sports car. Starting with a hand-built tubular steel frame, engineers fitted already existing VW components including the suspension, headlights, clutch, gearbox, cable-operated brakes, worm-gear steering, and various small parts. VW parts were a natural choice due to the early VW-Porsche relationship and because of VWs key role in the post-war rebuilding effort after British military officers brought VWs Wolfsburg factory back online in 1945 to fulfill car demand and to stimulate the nations economy.

By Geoff Fein While the Coast Guards effort to convert eight 110-foot cutters to 123- foot vessels continues to draw the attention and ire of lawmakers and watchdogs, the service has been successfully renovating 20 of its 110 fleet to keep them in service until the Fast Response Cutter (FRC) arrives. The Coast Guard is also renovating a number of its 210-foot and 270-foot Medium Endurance Cutters as part of the Mission Effectiveness Project (MEP), Ken King, project manager (PM) of 110-foot, 210-foot and 270-foot MEPs, told Defense Daily in a recent interview. A design defect compromised the physical integrity of the eight cutters and led to the inability of the boats to meet the performance requirements of the contract. That, in turn, led the Coast Guard to issue a letter of revocation for the eight 123-foot patrol boats in June 2007 (Defense Daily, Jan.

COSMETIC Surgery Live (Five, Sun). How to prevent premature ejaculation - with Vanessa Feltz.
Making a decision about cosmetic surgery can be a daunting one, and potential patients need help deciding if cosmetic surgery is right for them. If they do opt for surgery, they seek a guarantee that the surgery is performed in a safe setting. Local plastic surgeon and medical director of La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, R. Merrel Olesen, M.D., and his wife, Marie, have co-authored “Cosmetic Surgery For Dummies[R]”–one of the series of “For Dummies” books by Wiley Publishing. It contains direct and intelligent information about the various cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments available today and serves as a guide for potential cosmetic surgery patients. In a consumer-friendly style, “Cosmetic Surgery For Dummies” helps potential patients define a shopping process, just as they would to buy a car or another significant purchase. It helps patients narrow their choices so they choose the best doctor for themselves and for the procedure they are considering. Additionally helpful, the book includes many stories and photos of actual patients. While surgical results are very important, Dr. Olesen also urges prospective patients to look for signs of warmth and caring in prospective doctors and their staff. “Patients dont want to feel like just another case, rather than a person. They need to find a surgeon they like and trust,” said Dr. Olesen Writing this book involved many of La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre staff. Surgeons Lori Salz, Michael Roark, Robert Kearney and Johan Brahme all contributed significantly to the information about plastic surgery.

BANK of Scotland is to invest a six-figure sum in a project aimed at helping female entrepreneurs who find it difficult securing funding in the early days of their business. The two-year programme follows a survey which found that 60% of women had insufficient capital and 16% felt they had been discriminated against by a bank. The initiative will help entrepreneurs such as Christine Galloway, left, and Alison Fenton, who found it tough starting out in their motorhomes business. The pair set up St Andrews Motorhomes, Scotlands first motorhome rental firm, 15 years ago, despite difficulties in making banks take their idea seriously. They have now moved out of the rental business to run Scotlands second largest retailer of motorhomes, having been supported by BoS in the transitional years. Moray Watson of BoS said: “Our survey shows that accessing financial services to help women fund their business is a big issue.”

Cats have been a part of our lives for over 5,000 years. The ancient Egyptians were the first to tame, or domesticate, cats. In fact, they even worshipped the cat! Besides pet cats, tigers, leopards, pumas, ocelots, and lions are just a few of the many different species of cats. Although they may vary in size and markings, all cats have many things in common.Cats are mammals. They are also carnivores, or meat-eaters. Cats are well adapted for hunting and have many traits that help them to survive. Their eyes are able to see well in low light. This is important for an animal that is very active at night. Cats ears can turn backwards and sideways to gather sound from all directions. Long whiskers help cats to feel their way in the dark. Cats in the wild use their large, sharp teeth to catch their prey. They can even retract their claws inside their toes, until they are needed for climbing or clawing. This helps them walk quietly when stalking their prey.A cats beautiful spotted, striped, or solid-colored fur coat helps camouflage it, so it can blend in with its surroundings. All cats are also extremely strong, quick, and agile. These qualities help them to be successful hunters. Most wild cats live and hunt alone. Lions, though, live in groups called prides and hunt in teams. This helps lions to catch animals much larger than themselves.

Quarterly publication covers news and events in the publishing industry relevant to humanities and social sciences.
On June 6; 1947, the CO acquired some 9,447 box cars from the then-merged Pere Marquette fleet of freight cars. In doing so it ended up with new car numbers. We have been led to believe that these “new” Chesapeake Ohio car number equalled the number “2″ in front of the “old” Pere Marquette number: well, not always. The automobile industry, and General Motors in particular, was one of the PM Districts biggest customers. The CO needed automobile parts cars for shipping between supplier plants and assembly plants. As these assigned cars were modified, the mechanical department, continuing in the PMs tradition, agreed to designate numbers in the CO 254000 through CO 260127 range for automobile parts and other special cars. It appears that many older cars in the PM 54000-60066 series would just fade away and might not ever get renumbered. The freight car photographs that were recently uncovered are of the CO 254400-254460 series. They were modified and renumbered from cars in PM series 82000-83499 in mid-1949. The car series was later expanded to 71 cars ending with CO 254470. These cars serviced the GM parts and assembly plants in Flint and Saginaw, Michigan (regrettably, the pool name on the doors is illegible). Also in 1949, five other PM 82000-series were assigned to automotive parts service. They were assigned to a new, short-lived series: CO 258000258004. The remaining PM 82000-series cars began to fade out of the PM roster and into the CO roster as CO 282000-283499. Limited numbers of ex-PM cars, however, did carry PM reporting marks and numbers (therefore, it would not be strange to see both PM 82000 and corresponding CO numbers from the same or similar series in a yard together). The total number of PM and renumbered ex-PM 82000 series cars together remained relatively constant up until the late 1950s. Many were, however, reassigned back to general or new special uses (see the authors comments in the table on page
. Their totals started to dive in the mid-1960s, but a few stayed around into 1974, and one even survived until 1983. A table detailing the chronology of these roster changes, plus PM-era and later CO photographs of these cars, are provided at the end of this article.

A proposal now being considered by the U.S. Senate would impose new liability standards and regulations on debtors attorneys in bankruptcy cases. If these standards become law, they could impact many debtors bankruptcy attorneys, along with attorneys who work for programs funded by Legal Services Corp. or other legal aid programs, and attorneys who provide pro bono bankruptcy representation. On Feb. 1, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) introduced bankruptcy reform legislation, S. 256, that would increase the liability and administrative burdens of bankruptcy attorneys under the Bankruptcy Code. The new measure, which is similar to legislation that was approved by the House of Representatives last year, H.R. 975/S. 1920, would require debtors attorneys to: (1) certify the accuracy of the debtors bankruptcy schedules, under penalty of court sanctions; (2) certify the debtors ability to make payments under a reaffirmation agreement; and (3) identify, advertise and conduct themselves as debt relief agencies subject to a host of new regulations.

Dr. Rodney P. Steffen had been a dentist for four years in the U.S. Air Force when he opened a private dental practice in 1987 in Oklahoma City. He had a practice by himself until Dr. Kathy DeHart joined the practice in 1990. Steffen knew it made economic sense for more than one dentist to be operating out of one building. “Two dentists can work in a building and pay the same rent as one dentist,” he said. So Steffen put that knowledge to use in his practice. That one-dentist practice Steffen started 1987 has now expanded Community Dental Health Centers to three locations and 12 dentists, with a fourth location scheduled to open in mid-August in Moore.

Abstract Forensic engineers must be fully aware of what to look for in any given failure or accident so that they can be completely accurate in their evaluations and conclusions. An attorney must also be able to recognize various details that experts use to formulate their opinions. It is also useful for both engineers and attorneys to have a list of items that they may want to review to help analyze a failure or accident. The attorney can also use this list to gain knowledge while he or she develops a deposition strategy and questions for interrogations. This article covers 11 principal areas having to do with causes of failure and/or accidents that may need to be evaluated for a given occurrence. KEY WORDS: civil engineering, construction, failures There are always reasons for failures. This may seem like a truism; however, all possible failure areas are often not addressed in an investigation. The forensic engineer is one who uses engineering to interpret and/or establish the facts of matters through diligent investigation in a court of law. This definition can be further broadened to include investigations into technical items that are before the court. To do an investigation, a forensic engineer must address many areas that could possibly have caused a failure. If the forensic engineer misses any possible due that led to a particular failure, then he or she would be doing a great disservice to his or her client. Cases can be lost by an expert overlooking a basic fact or item. If an overlooked item is found after a case has been settled, the engineer might find him or herself as a defendant in a malpractice suit. The 11 major areas that can lead to failures related to construct projects and architectural and civil designs are described in this article.

Insurer tells insureds counsel accident is “suspicious”: Conflict of interest: Breach of implied covenant of good faith: Settlement. Doe v. Roe Ins. Co., Cal., Los Angeles County Super. Ct., confidential docket no., Dec. 28, 2000. Doe was sued for personal injuries arising out of a motor vehicle collision. Does automobile insurer retained an attorney to defend Doe and informed the attorney that the accident was “suspicious.” The attorney then began to communicate with attorneys for the insurer about the possibility of fraud by Doe-providing them with photographs, pleadings, and discovery-but did not notify Doe of these activities. The attorney also learned that the insurer was going to sue Doe, but did not inform Doe of the insurers intent. When the insurer later filed suit against Doe, it allegedly failed to serve her with the complaint and deliberately filed for entry of a default judgment when Doe did not respond to the complaint. Doe sued the insurer and the attorney, alleging breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, among other claims. Plaintiff asserted that the insurer did not inform her of her right to independent counsel even though it knew that its suspicions created a conflict of interest between it and plaintiff, Plaintiff also contended that defendants had engaged in the same wrongful conduct before.

Enterprise Random Password Manager Automatically Updates Privileged Passwords and All of the Programs, Files, and Objects that Reference the Credentials ORLANDO, Fla. — In response to threats posed by decrypted local passwords leading to peer-level network access, and the difficulty in thoroughly and rapidly updating every system with unique credentials, Lieberman Software Corporation today announced the availability of Enterprise Random Password Manager. Recent high profile security breaches, such as the TJX Companies attack, highlight the serious consequences that can result when sensitive administrator or root passwords are accessed by unauthorized sources. Enterprise Random Password Manager was developed to automatically discover and update all privileged password account use throughout the enterprise. It continuously randomizes all local passwords and updates every place where the credentials are referenced, such as services, tasks, and objects. Lieberman Software announced the release at Microsoft Tech-Ed 2008 in Orlando, FL, where the company is exhibiting this week in booth 815. “The problem with most password management solutions is that they reactively change only the local passwords that are identified by the IT group,” said Chris Stoneff, product manager at Lieberman Software. “This method is not inclusive of all the places that privileged passwords are used in the enterprise, leading to account lockouts as applications persist in referencing obsolete credentials. The Enterprise Random Password Manager strategy is to manage and update the privileged passwords, and also all of the objects in the enterprise that use these privileged credentials.” As a result of recent data breaches such as this years Societe Generale incident that led to billions of dollars in losses, the security of privileged administrator and root passwords is becoming a critical business concern. Gartner estimates that shared account password management tools will be used by more than 50% of large enterprises by year end 2010 to manage passwords for shared accounts.1

People still taking vacations, but taking shorter ones - business
travel less likely
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — From bargain hunting for accommodations to hopping in a car instead of
on a plane, many individuals and companies are responding to the
uncertain economic climate and worse personal financial conditions by
adjusting their travel behaviors in 2009 to find more affordable ways to
travel, but many aren’t eliminating travel plans altogether.
In a recent poll conducted by Harris
Interactive®,
48% of U.S. adults say their financial situation is worse now than it
was one year ago. For some that is translating into plans for fewer
vacations and fewer dollars spent on leisure travel in 2009.
While almost half plan to travel just as much or more in 2009 as they
did in 2008, two-fifths (38%) anticipate that the economy will have no
impact on their travel plans, and 8% plan to travel more in the next 12
months than they did in 2008, nearly two-fifths (37%) of
consumers say they are less likely to travel within the next 12 months
due to economic conditions.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the second consecutive month fewer homeowners lost their properties to foreclosure. In fact May foreclosures dropped 11.98% from April. The number of homeowners facing pre-foreclosure also was down again — 8.89% from April, according to California-based ForeclosureS.com, the original foreclosure information specialists. ForeclosureS.com, with an expanded data base of more than 5.5 million property listings, has been the professionals source for accurate foreclosure property information for more than 20 years. The company bases its analysis on the number of formal notices filed against a property during the foreclosure process. That can include notice of default, notice of foreclosure auction, and/or notice of REO foreclosure (lender-owned real estate that occurs after a foreclosed property fails to sell at auction and reverts back to the lender). “Of course were far from out of the woods,” she adds. “Despite the positive news, year-to-date 4.6 of every 1,000 households nationwide were repossessed by their lenders (353,621 total REOs YTD, up 68.36% from 210,033 filings YTD 2007). Month over month Mays 65,754 REO filings were down 16.02% from March numbers. Also YTD, 11.7 out of every 1,000 households faced pre-foreclosure (854,923 pre-foreclosure filings YTD, up 80.01% from 474,929 YTD 2007). But month-to-month numbers were more positive. May had 161,146 pre-foreclosure filings, down 16.63% from March,” says McGee. “Even with first-quarter mortgage delinquency rates from the Mortgage Bankers Association at a seasonally adjusted 6.35% of all loans outstanding (loans in foreclosure arent included), which is the highest recorded by the MBA since 1979, todays more current ForeclosureS.com numbers which include April and May indicate a brightening foreclosure picture. We just may have turned the corner,” adds McGee.
ForeclosureS.com Index Provides First Look at September Information; Nearly 750,000 Foreclosed Homes So Far This Year SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Foreclosures have left nearly three-quarters of a million people out of their homes nationwide so far this year–including more than 107,500 in September alone, according to ForeclosureS.coms U.S. Foreclosures Index, the first look at Septembers foreclosure numbers in the wake of the nations financial markets fiasco and congressional bailout. This years foreclosures mean that 10.3 of every 1,000 households has been foreclosed this year, according to ForeclosureS.com, a national leader in foreclosure and property information. ForeclosureS.com analysis shows the foreclosure tidal wave unabated. Foreclosures are up 6.6% from August to September, 25.8% from the second quarter to the third quarter, and 82.6% year-to-date compared with the same time a year ago. Foreclosures remain on track to surpass 1 million by year-end. Pre-foreclosures–which include notices of default and/or foreclosure auction prior to actual foreclosure–should end up a record 2 million, ForeclosureS.com reports. ForeclosureS.coms comprehensive analysis of pre-foreclosure and foreclosure proceedings nationwide is based on the number of formal notices filed against a property during the foreclosure process. That can include notice of default, notice of foreclosure auction, and/or notice of REO–lender-owned real estate that occurs after a foreclosed property reverts back to the lender. (All pre-foreclosure filings do not end up in foreclosure)

SAN DIEGO — The state of Georgia recently enacted life-settlement provider licensing requirements, and Life Settlement Solutions Inc., one of the nations premier sources of life-settlement funding, was among the first life-settlement providers to receive a license under the law. Georgia issued Life Settlement Solutions viatical (life) settlement provider license Jan. 12, 2007. Life Settlement Solutions has done business in Georgia since 2003, prior to life-settlement transactions being regulated in that state. The state expanded its viatical settlement laws to include life settlements, effective Nov. 5, 2005. Prior to the enactment of the 2005 legislation, life-settlement companies were allowed to conduct business in the state without licensing requirements. The new law provided for a transitional provision that permitted life-settlement providers previously conducting life settlements in the state to continue doing so while their license applications were pending, so long as the application was filed within 30 days following the effective date of the act. Life Settlement Solutions application was filed within that 30-day period, so there has been no interruption with the firms ability to conduct business in Georgia. “In addition to application materials, biographical submissions by officers, background checks and a review of Life Settlement Solutions plan of operations, Georgia also utilized a field-examination process under which it retained an independent examination firm that conducted a field audit of Life Settlement Solutions business practices and a review of closed case files,” said Larry Simon, president and founder of Life Settlement Solutions. “Our unblemished regulatory and compliance track record speaks highly to our ability to obtain licensing in every life-settlement regulated state throughout the nation. We are very pleased to be among the first life-settlement companies to be granted licensing in Georgia.”
Business newspaper serving Long Island, New York covers industries such as high technology, real estate, finance, law and health care.
